To Be Or Not To Be: A Discussion on Homosexuality.

To Be Or Not To Be: A Discussion on Homosexuality

By Deon Edwards

“It’s unnatural”. “God didn’t make us to be like that; he created Adam and Eve, not Adam and STEVE”! I even read once: “Homosexuality is NOT normal. On the contrary, it is a challenge to the norm. Nature exists whether academics likes it or not. In nature, procreation is the single, relentless rule. THAT is the norm. Our sexual bodies were designed to reproduction. No one is 'born gay'. The idea is ridiculous. Homosexuality is an adaptation, not an inborn trait”. Sounds compelling, right? I can see why someone heterosexual could see this as a plausible truth. Especially since so many people seem to frown upon homosexuality.

There are always going to be two points of interest in this; one is illustrated here with scientific claims.

“…nature exists whether academics likes it or not”. Well, many researchers have described homosexuality as something altogether different from sex. They must realize that animals can have sex with who they will, when they will and without consideration to a researcher's ethical principles. How many times has your leg been humped by a dog? Sex is a serious mother when you throw “nature” into the mix. Animal sexual behavior takes many different forms, even within the same species and the motivations for and implications of their behaviors have yet to be fully understood. So is that REALLY a conscious choice, or does that say “nature” is a lot more flexible than we give her credit for?

But, let’s give it the benefit of the doubt; maybe when they said “nature” they were referring to the nature of human beings. I mean, we are at the top of the whole evolutionary ladder, right? “…Our sexual bodies were designed to reproduction. No one is 'born gay.' The idea is ridiculous. Homosexuality is an adaptation, not an inborn trait”. That may be a little tougher to disclaim, right? Penis/vagina… match made in heaven, right? Think about all the intricacies that go into our sexual design. One is obvious made for the other. There is one little question I had always asked, though. If this is the case, and “our natural bodies” were made strictly for that reason, and no other, why is the male g-spot in the anus? Don’t worry….no hurry for an answer. I’ll wait. That doesn’t sound like a scientifically sound location to place a g-spot on a male….does it? There’s no “reproductive” organs in males … are they? So….why is it there?

Maybe it is like that for people who are programmed “differently then what most consider “the norm”. Let’s analyze it more…from a scientific perspective. Psychologically speaking, who would one choose to be shunned, beat, disowned by their family, killed, and even forced into taking their own life – as a matter of “choice”? Trust me, as a Black man, if I could, I would definitely make myself blonde and blue eyed in certain situations in life to escape a lot of the tribulation I personally been through, so why would someone choose to be that way to only go through all that? Don’t worry, I can wait for that answer, as well.

I mentioned earlier that there would be two points of interest to this; the other is religiously. I will be the first to tell you, I am not a scholar. Being that my whole young life was spent as a student in a Christian school from 1st grade through graduating high school, I think I can qualify to have this conversation.

The basic ideology of the bible is, “God is our Father” and we are His children. He created us, in His image. He is love. Who is capable of choosing who they love? Who is capable of choosing who they have that spiritual connection with? Furthermore, why would God design the male body with a g-spot in the anus, if it wasn’t to give pleasure to His children that were born a little different? Once you answer that, you could explain to me why He would then hate the whole act, and everything that is “homosexual”.

Could a simple answer be that it all boils down to lack of understanding and a fear of what we don’t understand? Similar talk has been made about a various amount of things that some people viewed to be “different” because of their lack of understanding. Mormons believe Blacks are cursed, and our skin complexion is our punishment.

The bible has been used to curse left-handed people. The bible contains over 100 favorable references to the right handed, and around 25 unfavorable references to the left hand. “Evil spirits lurk over the left shoulder - throw salt over this shoulder to ward them off”. In Roman times, salt was a very valuable commodity, giving rise to the word "salary" and was considered a form of money at the time. If salt was spilled, that was considered very bad luck that could only be avoided by throwing some of the spilled salt over your left shoulder to placate the devil. So are left handed people against nature and hated by God? Is that too a choice? Or, is it the way some people are merely programmed, and is neither right nor wrong?

I anxiously await the answers to the questions I asked. Maybe I am wrong, but logic doesn’t seem to think that to be the case - at least, from my perspective. But who knows; I could be wrong. Just seems to me, if I were going to hate my child for smoking, I wouldn’t leave my cigarettes in his bedroom.
